Kids on the Block Program Overview


Sticks and Stones (Kindergarten OR 1st grade):
This program was developed for younger audiences to educate, as well as hold their attention. The presentation is a short puppet show about teasing and name-calling followed by a visual aide and interactive session between the puppeteers and children dealing with how painful and unforgettable bullying can be.

Awareness of Differences (1st OR 2nd Grade):
The goal of this program is to promote understanding and acceptance of individual differences. This second grade presentation includes visual differences such as cerebral palsy, blindness and deafness.

Awareness of Differences (2nd OR 3rd Grade):
This program deals with differences of all kinds, including medical, mental health, and cultural differences. These topics are mental retardation, ADHD, epilepsy, spina bifida, and cultural diversity.


Child Abuse Prevention (3rd Grade):
This program empowers the students to identify physical and sexual abuse, to learn what to do in an abusive situation and to learn how to say NO! It also provides guidance and emotional support to children who have been abused.

Combating Childhood Obesity (3rd OR 4th grade):

This topic was developed to educate children about the relationship between food and physical movement and their effects on weight and
health. It also promotes sensitivity, understanding and acceptance of differences in body types.


Gift of Life (4th Grade):
This program explains organ and tissue donation and discusses coping
with a death in a family. It identifies the stages of grieving letting children know that it is alright to talk about your feelings.


Safe Schools (4th Grade):
The focus of this presentation is conflict resolution and problem solving.
This educational curriculum is designed to explain/define bullying, introduce problem solving techniques, encourage children to talk about their feelings and unjust situations, and to encourage students to help each other by becoming a Bully Buster.


Safe Schools (5th Grade):
The focus of this program is the prevention of stereotyping and prejudice, and problem solving. This curriculum is designed to increase awareness and acceptance of human similarities and differences, encourage students to reject unacceptable bullying behavior in others, suggest ways for students to work together to stop bullying and prejudice.

HIV/AIDS Prevention (5th Grade):
This abstinence-based program includes a description of the disease, definition of high risk behaviors, including drug and alcohol use, myths about the spread of AIDS, values and choices, and compassion for a person who is dying.

Teen Pregnancy & Substance Abuse Prevention (6th Grade):
This abstinence-based program includes myths about teen motherhood and sex as a responsible adult choice, information about modes of transmitting STDs, as well as educating students about substance abuse and introducing them to critical thinking, problem solving, and negotiation skills.
